Online Psychotherapy as Good as In-Person Treatment, Study Says

Online Psychotherapy as Good as In-Person Treatment, Study Says

A new study from Switzerland found that online psychotherapy is "just as efficient" as traditional, in-person therapy.
University of Zurich clinical researchers analyzed 62 patients who were experiencing moderate depression. The university said the patients were divided in two equal groups: one that received traditional cognitive behavior therapy both orally and in writing; and another who got online therapy and had to "perform one predetermined written task per therapy unit." The therapists knew the patients by name.
SEE ALSO: 5 Ways to Instantly Connect With Doctors
Following the therapy treatments, researchers say both groups reported lower levels of depression. The specific results were similar: 53% of patients in the online therapy group were no longer diagnosed as depressed, compared to 50% in the face-to-face group. The effectiveness of online therapy even continued three months after treatment. The university said after three months, depression couldn't be detected in 57% of the online group versus 42% of the traditional therapy group.
Almost all the patients in the study were reportedly satisfied with both forms of treatment. Among the online group, 96% characterized contact with their therapist as "personal," compared to 91% in the conventional treatment group.
Online therapy could be effective as a supplement, Professor Andreas Maercker explained in a statement :
"Our study is evidence that psychotherapeutic services on the Internet are an effective supplement to therapeutic care."
"Our study is evidence that psychotherapeutic services on the Internet are an effective supplement to therapeutic care."
While the overall study results might seem counterintuitive who view virtual treatment as inferior to physical human interaction, it does seem to show potential for supplemental telehealth services.
But the best medium for therapy is likely dependent on each person and each situation. The United States' National Institute for Mental Health has resources for those who need help addressing mental illness. If you are or someone you know is incrisis: contact your doctor, call 911 for emergency services or call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline's 24-hour number at 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255).

Astronaut Shows Off Leaky Suit That Led to Spacewalk Emergency

Astronaut Shows Off Leaky Suit That Led to Spacewalk Emergency

Astronaut Luca Parmitano was on a routine spacewalk outside the International Space Station on July 16 when his helmet began to fill with water.
Parmitano, who was working alongside NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy, was just more than one hour into the planned six-and-a-half hour EVA (extravehicular activity) when the back of his head felt wet. At first, the Italian astronaut thought the water came from his drink bag, so he emptied it. But when water continued to trickle throughout the helmet, NASA aborted the spacewalk.

While the exact source of the leak remains a mystery, Cassidy uploaded a video from the ISS on Tuesday to give an up-close look at the faulty spacesuit.
In the video below, Cassidy explains that cooling water seeped into Parmitano's helmet through the ventilation system, which is why the back of his head felt damp. It's common for astronauts to sweat inside their suits, but Parmitano knew this was actual water because it began to gather into floating bubbles in the zero-gravity environment, creeping into his ear cups, eyes and nose.
Parmitano suffered no injuries from the leak and was able to safely enter the station and remove his suit. However, Cassidy points out that if the leaking had continued, "it would've been really serious."

Snowden's Asylum Grant Undercuts Obama’s Efforts in Russia

Snowden's Asylum Grant Undercuts Obama’s Efforts in Russia

Russia's decision to grant temporary asylum to fugitive National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden is a blow to President Barack Obama's desire to "reset" U.S. relations with its Cold War enemy.
The Russian action puts in doubt a summit planned for next month between Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin, and drew calls from U.S. lawmakers for retaliatory actions likely to further strain relations between the two military powers. The U.S. is evaluating the "utility" of a summit, according to White House spokesman Jay Carney, who said today the president is "extremely disappointed."
Obama's call early in his first term for improving relations has been hindered by conflicts over human rights, Syria, and even U.S. adoptions of Russian orphans, as well as by the chilly personal relationship between the two leaders.
"We're far apart on a lot of issues, we don't have a lot of leverage, and the Russians seem to like it this way," said Barry Pavel, director of the Scowcroft Center at the Atlantic Council, a Washington policy group. "This is part of the pattern of relations since the Obama administration began."
Ariel Cohen, a Russia scholar at the Heritage Foundation, another Washington policy research organization, called the Snowden decision a "slap in the face to the U.S. and President Obama" and a further sign that "under Putin, the vector of Russian foreign policy is away from the West and away from the United States."

"A Setback"

Senator Robert Menendez, the New Jersey Democrat who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, called the action "a setback" to U.S.-Russia relations, while Republican SenatorJohn McCain of Arizona called for the White House to "fundamentally rethink our relationship with Putin's Russia."
The administration's business with Russia extends far beyond the flap over Snowden, whom administration officials routinely dismiss as a computer hacker.
Russia has supported international sanctions to pressure Iran to abandon its suspected pursuit of nuclear weapons. The two nations have sparred over Syria, as Russia used its UN veto to block efforts to censure the Assad regime.
"Obama, being in his second term, is more preoccupied by his legacy rather than winning the domestic electorate," Lilit Gevorgyan, senior analyst for Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States at Englewood, Colorado-based IHS Global Insight, said in an email. "To achieve a peace deal in the Middle East, quell Syria and end the Iranian standoff, Russia's support would be instrumental. Hence, Obama may still chose to make the trip to Moscow if there are informal assurances that he would not leave Russia empty-handed and some progress can be made in Syria and Iran."

Afghan Exit

The Obama administration, eager to withdraw most U.S. troops from Afghanistan by the end of next year, also is counting on Russia to approve transit rights through some former Soviet republics for American forces and equipment. Obama also is seeking an accord on reductions in both countries' strategic nuclear arsenals beyond the New Start nuclear treaty negotiated during his first term.
The U.S. relationship with Russia "is based in realism, and it is a simple fact that the so-called reset in our relations with Russia produced positive benefits" in terms of U.S. national security, Carney said today at the White House.
Pavel of the Atlantic Council was less optimistic. "If Putin cared about these things, he'd have Snowden on a plane," he said.
The economic relationship between the two countries is less significant. According to an April 2013 report by the nonpartisan U.S. Congressional Research Service, U.S. exports to Russia in 2012 were $10.7 billion, up from $9.3 billion in 2008, and American imports from Russia were $29.3 billion, up from $26.8 billion in 2008.

Growing Market

"Russia and the United States have never been major economic partners, and it is unlikely that the significance of bilateral trade will increase much in the near term," the report found. "However, in some areas, such as agriculture, Russia has become an important market for U.S. exports. Russia is the largest foreign market for U.S. poultry."
"U.S. exports to Russia of energy exploration equipment and technology, as well as industrial and agricultural equipment, have increased as the dollar has declined in value," the research service said. "Russian demand for these products will likely grow as old equipment and technology need to be replaced and modernized."

Airport Limbo

Snowden's arrival at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport from Hong Kong June 23 disrupted efforts to improve relations and smooth the way for the September summit. As Snowden waited in airport limbo pending a Russian decision, U.S. officials repeatedly refused to confirm that Obama would keep a commitment to meet with Putin in Moscow in conjunction with a Group of 20 nations economic summit Sept. 5-6 in St. Petersburg.
As recently as eight days ago, Secretary of State John Kerry appealed to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in a phone call. Kerry "reiterated our belief, the belief of the United States, that Mr. Snowden needs to be returned to the United States, where he will have a fair trial, that Russia still has the ability to do the right thing," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters July 24.
Instead, Snowden left the airport today after receiving temporary asylum for one year in Russia. Giving Snowden refuge lets Putin position Russia’s democracy as equivalent to America's and demonstrate internationally "that democracies come in all different forms," said Matthew Rojansky, director of the Russia Program at the Wilson Center, also a Washington policy group.

Lingering Mistrust

"They can say, 'We'll give him amnesty just like you, America, have given plenty of Russian dissidents asylum,'" Rojansky said.
The Cold War legacy of mistrust lingers between the U.S. and Russia, Rojansky said.
"You can never truly reset, and you can never truly forget," Rojansky said. "The idea you can wipe the slate clean of all the little slights since the end of the Cold War and the Cold War itself, it's absurd."
In March 2009, then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton presented Lavrov with a red “reset button” intended to symbolize efforts to improve relations. The gesture misfired because the word “reset” was incorrectly translated into Russian as "overcharge."
"You got it wrong," said Lavrov, commenting on the translation as the two pushed the reset button together.
His comment could have applied to the attempted reset itself, as a succession of disputes has led to a tit-for-tat dynamic that Kerry, in his Senate confirmation hearing on Jan. 24, said has set back relations.

Lost Ground

"We have some ground to make up," Kerry said, referring to a Russian decision to bar Americans from adopting Russian orphans in response to Congress' approval of a law that banned Russian human-rights violators from entering the U.S. He said relations had "slid backwards for the last couple of years."
The increasing uncertainty about next month's summit follows Putin's decision not to attend a meeting with Obama in May 2012, one sign of how he's pulled back from ties with the American leader.
The snub was particularly acute because in an effort to make Putin more comfortable, Obama had moved the meeting to the presidential retreat in Camp David, Maryland, from the margins of a NATO summit in Chicago to which Putin wasn't invited.
"Russia is playing a role with which it's been comfortable for a long time and has become something of a default — that is, a counterweight to the United States on major international issues," said Rojansky.

U.S. Leverage

The U.S. still has influence with Russia, Rojansky said. "There's always leverage, the question is what you want to lever," he said, adding that the planned summit is important to Putin since "it's always significant to be seen to be meeting with the president of the United States."
Even so, there's little indication that a summit would produce anything substantive right now, Rojansky said.
"It's pretty clear the president's top priority with Russia is the nuclear agenda, not Snowden," he added. "He's given several major speeches on the issue that have fallen on deaf ears in Russia."

These Furby-Inspired Album Covers Will Give You Major Nostalgia

These Furby-Inspired Album Covers Will Give You Major Nostalgia

There are many reasons we love the Internet, but mostly it's because no matter how offbeat an idea may be, it has the potential to become a major hit.
And today's coolest (read: oddest) Internet idea is Furby Living, a project by Swedish artist William Källback Winter which re-imagines Top 40 album covers with Furbies, the oddly lifelike toys that dominated the late 90s and early 2000s. Winter creates each album cover through a mix of photography and Photoshop, spending two to five hours on each.

Winter owns four Furbies himself. "I actually pick the Furby depending on the expression I need," he told Yahoo!. "The original 1998 Furby is great for more wide-open eyes. The 2005 Furby has bottom eyelids, which is great for squinting eyes, as well as a more expressive mouth. The 2012 Furby doesn't have eyelashes, which works better for guys — even though I've only used it forJustin Bieber that way. I usually just try posing them for a bit and see which Furby looks most like the artist I'm recreating!"

DOJ Proposes Barring Apple E-Book Deals for 5 Years

DOJ Proposes Barring Apple E-Book Deals for 5 Years

The Department of Justice and 33 attorneys general handed Apple a series of proposals on Friday to make amends for e-book price fixing.
Chief among the recommendations is a five-year ban on making new e-book distribution contracts with five major publishers: Hachette Book Group; HarperCollins Publishers; Holtzbrinck Publishers, which does business as Macmillan; Penguin Group (USA); and Simon & Schuster.
SEE ALSO: Best-Selling Authors Discuss the Future of E-Books
In addition, for two years, Apple would be required to let e-book rival retailers like Amazon and Barnes & Noble provide links to their stores within iPad and iPhone apps, "allowing consumers who purchase and read e-books on their iPads and iPhones to easily compare Apple’s prices with those of its competitors."
The group would also like to prohibit Apple from making deals with suppliers of e-books, music, movies, TV shows and other entertainment content that are "likely to increase the prices at which Apple’s competitor retailers may sell that content" — in other words, price-fixing.
The DOJ announced its recommendations after a New York district judge found Apple guilty of conspiring to raise the retail prices of e-books with publishers and violating antitrust and state laws. Apple was accused of with working with the five publishers to raise the prices of new releases and bestsellers from Amazon's established $9.99 price limit to between $12.99 and $14.99.
The negotiations took place in the two months leading into the launch of the iPad and iBookstore in January 2010 and caused the prices of some e-books to double in the first half of the year, U.S. District Judge Denise Cote said.
A hearing on the proposals will be held on Aug. 9.
Apple investors seemed to shrug off the news; in early afternoon trading, the company's stock was slightly up.

Use Instagram to Earn Brand Rewards With SnapMyAd

Use Instagram to Earn Brand Rewards With SnapMyAd

One hundred thirty million people share photos and videos on Instagram every month, many of them posting their favorite hobbies, locations, and brands. Users share 45 million photos per day. One app is connecting you with brands to get rewards for those pictures; perks in exchange for letting brands use your Instagram photos in ad campaigns.
SnapMyAd is a free iOS app rewarding brand enthusiasts for their photos. Users sign in with their Instagram profiles and pull photos into the app. They then search which brands to interact with and for what type of perk they're willing to give up pictures. A scoring system based on likes helps pick winners. Freebies include Amazon gift cards, coffee and magazine subscriptions, all for posting content you normally would.
SEE ALSO: Advertising on Instagram: Unacceptable or Understandable?
Brands can push specific product sales, promotions and events for consumers to take photos of, and decide which pictures they want. Once both parties agree on a perk, brands can use those photos in campaigns. When users and brands have swapped prizes, SnapMyAd sends brands ads along with the email and home address of users. A recent exchange came from the fashion blog Hello Perfect, which gave out a subscription to InStyle for the winner of a photo contest defining what "perfect" is.
"It’s a whole new way to harvest these ads and focus these consumers on what type of ads to make for their brand," explains co-founder Josh Lee.
Lee and his wife Yvette came up with the idea last year after flying through a tropical storm in Florida. The pair snapped a photo of the wing of the plane and posted on Instagram, praising the airline despite the turbulence.
"It occurred to me that I just created an ad," Lee told Mashable. "SnapMyAd was born that morning."
Lee says he wanted to create a two-way flow benefiting both sides, while also helping eliminate Instagram spam, a growing problem. Plus, he says users can promote brand-centric photos that they wouldn't necessarily share with their Instagram followers.
Since its May launch, the app has over 1,000 downloads, and 2,000 pictures submitted. The service doesn't have in-app ads, nor do they sell user data to third-parties. SnapMyAd only gets paid from brands; from $500 up to $2,500 per promotion. The company is not yet profitable. The Lees spent the last year bootstrapping, even selling their 1929 Ford Hot Rod. They used that money to hire the Happy Fun Corp to develop the app and employ contractors.
Currently, the half a dozen brands on-board are more niche than household, including an online children's department store (CookiesKids), a coconut oil company (Kelapo Coconut), and an online sports store (Lowest First Sports). Promos for Fortune 500s such as Coke and Nike have been created to show brands what the app can do.
Lee says big deals are in development, however: "We are talking with some huge brands that have millions of followers on Instagram and Facebook who will really push us to scale quickly."

Study: U.S. Consumes More Digital Media Than TV for First Time

The amount of time Americans spend consuming digital media is set to eclipse the amount of time spent watching television for the first time this year.
According to an eMarketer study released Thursday, Americans spend four hours and 40 minutes online using either a mobile device or a computer, compared with four hours and 31 minutes watching TV.
