It's expected to break the record for quickest entertainment release to make $1 billion

Grand Theft Auto 5 made $800 million in sales on the game’s first day of release.

This is the highest launch-day revenue for a GTA game and the largest sum of money for any Take-Two published game ever.

Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 still holds the record for quickest entertainment product to reach $1 billion in sales, but it accomplished this goal in 15 days. It seems like Rockstar’s GTA V is set to smash this record.

To put this in perspective, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 actually reached this milestone two days before 2009′s Avatar. Yesterday, analysts predicted that GTA V would reach $1 billion in sales in just the game’s first month of release.

“All of us at Take-Two are thrilled with the initial response to Grand Theft Auto 5. Once again, the team at Rockstar Games have outdone themselves, setting the entertainment industry’s new standard for creativity, innovation and excellence,” said Strauss Zelnick, chairman and CEO of Take-Two, in a press release today. 

GTA IV shipped 3.6 million units ($310 million) on launch-day in April 2008, 6 million units ($500 million) during its first week, and 11 million units ($900 million) during the game’s first month. To date, GTA IV has shipped 25 million copies.
